Behind the Aisles: Meet Samantha, Publix’s Breakfast Foods and Coffee Buyer

At Publix, our buyers are the ones who ensure our shelves are stocked with high-quality products that meet the evolving tastes of our customers. With over 50,000 items in our stores, each buyer plays a unique and vital role.

A day in the life of a buyer.

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Samantha, our Breakfast Foods and Coffee buyer, who gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring your morning favorites to the table.

Samantha’s role is all about the balance between strategy and creativity, as well as data and relationships.

“As a grocery buyer, I oversee the selection, procurement, pricing, and promotion of products to ensure our stores are stocked with high-quality items that align with customer needs and preferences,” Samantha shares.

Her day-to-day includes everything from planning store promotions and analyzing results to collaborating with suppliers on new items and market trends. She also works closely with merchandisers and retail improvement specialists on store execution and new store modeling.

“Planning is key in the buyer role,” Samantha says. “To manage the workload effectively amidst numerous simultaneous tasks, it’s essential to plan ahead.”

Choosing the right products.

When it comes to deciding what makes it onto Publix shelves, Samantha and her team consider a variety of factors.

“We look at cost, promotional opportunities, trends, and whether the item fills a gap in our assortment,” she shares. “Our goal is to provide our customers with the right products at the best value.”

From store manager to buyer.

Samantha’s journey to becoming a buyer was driven by her desire for continuous growth.

“My first position in retail was as a cashier. I discovered the opportunities at Publix and worked my way up to store manager, and now, buyer. There truly is a ‘smorgasbord’ of opportunities here. My retail background has been incredibly valuable. It helps me understand how the decisions I make affect both our store associates and customers. The fast-paced environment of our stores translates to the dynamic and deadline-driven purchasing environment,” Samantha says.

Samantha’s passion for her work is matched by her appreciation for Publix’s culture.

“I enjoy working at Publix because of its strong emphasis on community and customer service. Over the years, I’ve formed many friendships—whether through working alongside colleagues or interacting with customers. These relationships have made my work experience more enjoyable and fulfilling,” Samantha says.

Publix also supports her professional growth through programs like tuition reimbursement and the mentor/protégé program.

“I’ve benefited from both,” she says. “These opportunities empower associates to advance their careers and achieve their goals.”

Her advice for aspiring buyers?

“Focus on developing skills like negotiation, analytical thinking, and decision-making. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are also important for working with suppliers and other stakeholders,” Samantha says.
