A Journey to Freedom and Belonging at Publix

In August 2003, Nazanin “Naz” left Iran in search of higher education in the United States. Facing limited opportunities at home, Naz arrived in Woodstock, GA at just 19 years old, navigating the language and culture, and knowing no one except a friend who offered a place to stay.

Eager to start a new life, Naz applied to several retail stores. Within a week, Publix Store #0636 reached out for an interview. Nervous and homesick, the language barrier felt overwhelming. But everything changed when she met Store Manager James. Despite the challenges, James treated Naz with kindness and respect, his calm demeanor and welcoming smile providing comfort. At the end of the interview, Naz was hired.

“I suddenly started crying and the only action I could show at that very moment was to hug him and thank him for giving me an opportunity.  During my time at that store, he checked on me every time he worked with me to make sure I was ok, and he truly made me feel I belonged to Publix family,” said Naz.

Twenty-two years and seven different positions later, Naz is the Investigator for the Employment Law and Investigations department, at Publix. 

When reflecting on her Publix journey Naz shared “For my entire life, I always wanted to feel like I belonged.  I unfortunately could not have that in my country and community.  I lived far away from my family and friends for years.  Working in Publix gave me a sense of community, family, friends, and feeling of belonging.  This is very precious to my heart. It is a blessing to being able to come to my Publix family and call it work every day.”
