Tawanna’s Three-Decade Career Journey 

How It Started.

When Tawanna joined Publix in 1995, a lifelong career wasn’t part of the plan. After studying computer information systems, she hoped to find a job in her field. Instead, she accepted a position as a Deli clerk, a decision that would ultimately shape the next 31 years of her life.

Publix was already a familiar environment for Tawanna. At the time, many of her family members were associates.

After spending two years working in retail, Tawanna accepted an entry-level position in the Safety Department at the corporate office. From there, she continued advancing through new opportunities and promotions.

“I didn’t know I was going to make Publix a career,” Tawanna said. “But the more I grew, the more I realized this was where I was meant to be.”

Throughout her career, supportive managers helped her recognize her full potential. “My managers saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself,” she said. “They challenged me, coached me, and gave me opportunities to learn, grow, and be innovative.” Their encouragement, combined with her commitment to professional development, gave her the confidence and experience needed to take the next step each time an opportunity became available.

How It’s Going.

Today, Tawanna serves as supervisor of retail safety for the Lakeland Division, partnering with stores to build and maintain a strong culture of safety. Her role includes consulting with store teams, educating associates, visiting departments, and helping leaders identify opportunities to improve safety practices. 

“We want safety to be a core value, not just a priority,” she said. “Priorities can change. Safety has to stay top of mind.”

While promoting safety is at the heart of her role, empowering associates is equally important to her. “I love sharing my story of starting as a Deli clerk,” she said. “I encourage associates to see every role as a stepping stone. Continue learning, embrace new challenges, and never stop taking the next step forward.”

Outside of work, Tawanna’s daughters motivate her to be her best every day, while her Publix family continues to inspire her after nearly three decades in the same department.

Reflecting on her journey, Tawanna describes it as “a journey of resilience and perseverance” that challenged her personally and professionally. From deli clerk to division safety leader, her story is proof that one opportunity and the willingness to keep growing can lead to a rewarding career at Publix.
