Meet store manager Tamara from store #1109.

Our founder, George Jenkins, believed that investing in and treating associates well was crucial for the company’s success. This philosophy was embraced by many of his associates, including Tamara, a store manager in Lauderhill, Florida.

Tamara’s journey with Publix began in 2004 as a cashier. After six months, she was promoted to office staff and became a full-time employee just two years later.

“Becoming full-time was a turning point for me; I became vested [after three years] and developed an insatiable curiosity about Publix and its operations,” said Tamara.

It was then that an assistant store manager encouraged her to take the manager’s test, a decision that would shape her career at Publix.

“Within six months of passing the test, I was elevated to assistant customer service manager. This role eventually led to my promotion to customer service manager, a moment I believed marked the pinnacle of my career,” said Tamara.

Tamara is grateful for the way Publix has supported her professional growth and development.

“The support I’ve received in developing my career has been truly inspirational. I consider myself fortunate to have worked alongside an inspiring group of leaders who consistently recognized my potential, mentored me, and provided invaluable guidance throughout my career. Their encouragement has been instrumental in shaping my growth and success,” she said.

Tamara often returns the favor by investing in her associates.

“I’m motivated to coach, mentor, and offer my support in any way possible to help advance an associate’s career. I actively seek out associates who may not recognize their leadership potential—after all, someone once saw the potential in me. It is due diligence to pay it forward and uncover the potential in others, encouraging them to pursue management roles they may not have considered for themselves. I believe in investing in our associates as it will be a return on investment as we continue to grow,” said Tamara.
