Meet Allen.

As an industrial safety trainer, Allen educates associates on the safe operation of powered industrial trucks (PITs), both in the classroom and in a hands-on learning environment. His goal is to authorize associates prior to starting a position that requires them to operate a PIT. In order to accomplish this, he must be a subject matter expert as well as a great communicator. “Having confidence in what you are teaching plays a huge role,” he says. “Active listening and empathy as well. Having patience is key when training someone. Being bilingual in Spanish/English has helped tremendously when training someone whose first language is not English.”
Allen’s week begins with facilitating a safety orientation to new Distribution and Manufacturing associates. This is reinforced by hands-on training on specific PIT, which differs for each associate depending on their role. Allen and his team also train existing associates who have changed roles and have new PIT requirements, as well as associates who would like to be crossed-trained on specific PIT to aid them in accomplishing their work.
“Being able to connect with each individual associate is what I enjoy the most,” Allen says. “Conversing about their future goals here at Publix always seems to take the edge off a little bit, for those associates who are nervous about operating a PIT for the first time.”
Allen originally joined Publix as a floor selector in 2015, shortly after graduating high school. He later became a selector trainer. Throughout his time in Distribution, he was trained in various operations, such as forklift operation, loading, quality checking, and receiving.
Allen believes the culture at Publix is “not like any other. I feel like Publix is my second home. We value each other as the most important resource within our company, as mentioned in our safety promise.”
Allen’s hobbies include playing soccer with his two sons, fishing, working out, grilling, and cooking. He enjoys good food, attending soccer games, and traveling with his family. “My father has inspired me throughout my entire life. My parents immigrated to the United States almost 40 years ago from Mexico, not knowing what was to come, but in search of a better life. Seeing the trials and tribulations my father went through made me stronger and gave me the work ethic that I have today.”
Allen’s personal philosophy is that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. “We are all human beings who deserve to be treated fairly, regardless of background,” he says. “It costs nothing to be nice.” His goal is to perpetuate the Publix culture and help others enjoy the career opportunities Publix has to offer.
