As store manager, Vanessa exemplifies what it means to lead with excellence, compassion, and integrity. She oversees the total operation and performance of her Publix store—a role she describes as “leading the total operation of the store by driving performance, developing associates, and ensuring an exceptional customer experience.” Since joining Publix in 2006, her leadership has not only shaped successful store teams but has also inspired the next generation of leaders. 

Vanessa’s journey began in 2006, when she joined Publix and quickly demonstrated her ability to motivate others and lead with empathy. Before becoming store manager, she served as an assistant store manager in three different locations—each experience strengthening her operational expertise and leadership style. “Working in different stores exposed me to diverse teams, management styles, and challenges,” Vanessa explains. “Those experiences helped me adapt, communicate effectively, and lead through excellence.” 

A typical day for Vanessa is filled with energy, collaboration, and purpose. “I start each morning by walking the sales floor, meeting with department managers, and making sure our store is ready to deliver an exceptional shopping experience,” she says. Throughout the day, she coaches associates, analyzes results, and ensures that every department is aligned on goals. “Every day centers on leadership, accountability, and teamwork—creating a culture where associates feel valued and customers receive the high-quality service Publix is known for.” 

Her leadership philosophy centers on people first. “I believe in leading by example, treating everyone with respect, and focusing on growth—for myself and my team,” Vanessa says. “Strong leadership is built on integrity, accountability, and empathy.” She makes it a priority to coach and recognize associates daily, celebrating their successes and helping them prepare for the next step in their careers. 

Mentorship has played a major role in Vanessa’s journey in both giving and receiving. She credits women leaders and mentors who helped shape her confidence and leadership approach. Vanessa now pays that mentorship forward, helping others grow into strong leaders. “Seeing an associate I’ve mentored get promoted and succeed is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.” 

Outside of work, Vanessa enjoys traveling the world and experiencing new cultures, which she says helps her gain perspective and balance. She also values spending quality time with her family, her partner, and her chocolate labrador. “Whether it’s exploring new places or relaxing at home, those moments help me recharge.” 

Vanessa’s greatest inspiration is her mother. “My mom raised my brother and me on her own, working multiple jobs to give us the best life possible,” she shares. “She taught me what true strength looks like—hard work, perseverance, and grace under pressure.” 

Vanessa hopes her legacy at Publix will be one of empowerment and growth. “I want to be remembered as a leader who led with compassion, consistency, and integrity,” she says. “If my leadership inspires others to grow, believe in themselves, and uphold Publix’s values, then I know I’ve made a lasting impact.” 

In her 19 years with Publix, Vanessa has not only helped lead successful stores—she’s helped people grow personally and professionally. Her story reminds us that leadership isn’t just about managing operations; it’s about inspiring others, creating opportunity, and leaving a legacy of kindness and excellence that will continue for generations to come.
