5 Interview Tips to Help You Stand Out
You did it — you applied for a position at Publix! You completed the application, uploaded your resume and cover letter, grabbed the hiring manager’s attention and earned yourself an interview! Now what? As a job candidate, you should strive to set yourself apart from other candidates throughout the entire selection process. Your application stood out and your interview should follow suit! Here are five important tips to help you shine in your interview.
Tip #1: Be prepared
You never know what questions the hiring manager will ask during an interview, so it’s important to be prepared. We recommend researching Publix’s history, community involvement and culture. Additionally, visit our careers website to learn more about the department you applied to. One of the best ways to prepare for an interview is to have a strong understanding of the job responsibilities so you can connect your previous work experience to the position you applied for. As you research, write down any questions you have for the hiring manager. It is important to be prepared with three to five questions.
After you’ve done your research, prepare your portfolio. This should include copies of your resume and cover letter, and samples of your work, if applicable. A printed portfolio is preferred unless your interview is virtual. Lastly, practice a mock interview by asking a friend or family member to role play with you. Have them act as the interviewer and ask you questions about yourself and your work experience. You can find common interview questions on the internet.
If your interview is virtual, we recommend setting up your computer or phone to test your interview area. Ensure there is nothing distracting in the background and that you have a strong internet connection so there is no lag during your interview. We also recommend using headphones with a microphone because computer and phone audio can cause an unwanted echo.
Tip #2: Dress for success
One of the best ways to set yourself apart from other candidates is by dressing for success. Pick an outfit that is appropriate for the position. Typically, business professional is proper attire. Don’t overdo it with excessive jewelry and cologne or perfume. Remember, simple is best. You want the interviewer to focus on your answers, not your necklace.
Lay out your outfit the day before your interview. This will ensure you are on time to your interview rather than scrambling at the last minute. By on time, we mean 10 minutes early, of course. It’s always better to be early than late.
Tip #3: Make a good impression
First and foremost, turn your cellphone off or put it on silent mode as soon as you arrive at your interview to avoid interruptions and distractions.
Next, be sure to make eye contact with each person you meet. If your interview is virtual, make sure to look at each person in the interview and not yourself. When introducing yourself, speak clearly and concisely, and be prepared with a short introduction. It’s common for interviewees to be asked to tell the interviewer about themselves. A good introduction includes:
Keep your introduction brief and don’t add too much personal information. Remember, there will be direct questions throughout your interview to collect additional details the interviewers want to know.
- Your name and where you’re from.
- Your education background.
- Your work experience.
- One thing you like to do outside of work.
- A brief statement on why you are a good fit for the role.
Tip #4: Understand the question
There is no need to rush during your interview. Take your time when answering questions. Be sure to listen carefully to the questions and don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat the questions if necessary. If you need to, take a moment to think about your answer before responding.
You don’t have to answer immediately after the question is asked. If you can’t think of an answer, feel free to ask the interviewer if you can come back to that question at the end of the interview.
Tip #5: Follow up
At the end of your interview, thank the interviewers for the opportunity and inquire about next steps or when the hiring decision will be made.
After your interview, send a thank-you note. We recommend a handwritten note that thanks the hiring manager for the opportunity and reiterates why you believe you are the best candidate for the position. You can use a public address found through an internet search and address it to the attention of the hiring manager.
