The purpose of this position is to assist senior management with multiple tasks and projects. The tax function includes tax compliance, financial reporting, audits/controversy, advising management regarding the tax implications of business decision and tax minimization strategies. Projects to help lead these efforts include preparing and/or reviewing tax work papers, returns and payments, assisting with financial and payroll reporting, leading projects to enhance tax automation, supporting tax savings efforts, managing the quarterly financial reporting process, and managing tax audits. The Tax Manager reports to the Director of Tax.

The Tax Manager is responsible for assisting with managing the overall tax function. This includes:

  • Assisting in planning the federal and state income tax timeline which includes creating and managing calendars and due dates to ensure timely compliance
  • Assisting with the preparation/review of federal and state income tax returns and supporting workpapers
  • Assisting with the preparation/review of federal and state quarterly/annual estimated taxes
  • Working with tax consultants to minimize federal and state income taxes
  • Providing technical expertise and instruction in the development of tax requirements for new business ventures
  • Responding to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state auditor information document requests
  • Developing and preparing monthly ASC740 calculations for Publix including footnote disclosure and true-ups
  • Assisting with general ledger account analysis workpapers
  • Developing, documenting, and maintaining internal controls to comply with the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX)
  • Providing documentation quarterly to respond to financial accounting audits performed by both internal and external auditors
  • Attending accounting conferences to ensure best practices are utilized
  • Staying abreast of tax law changes, including reviewing daily updates from tax services such as CCH Answerconnect and BNA HR and Payroll Resource Center
  • Supporting and/or leading process improvement initiatives to increase overall efficiency
  • Handling various ad-hoc projects as they arise

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience
  • 8 years relevant business experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local employment tax and income tax laws
  • Knowledge of tax research techniques and tax research software
  • Knowledge of ASC740 principles
  • Knowledge of the tax treatment of various legal entities
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret tax law
  • Ability to plan and organize projects to meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and leadership skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Judgement and decision-making skills
  • Experience with SAP or similar enterprise-wide software
  • Basic Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Excel
  • Intermediate skills with tax provision software and tax research tools (e.g., OneSource, CCH AnswerConnect, and Bloomberg/BNA HR & Payroll Resource)
  • Ability to manage a fluctuating workload and tight deadlines by working extended hours and/or weekends during significant financial accounting and tax reporting periods
  • Willingness to work a minimum of 45 hours per week (average for the year)
  • Willingness to travel overnight on occasion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Accounting with emphasis in Tax or MBA with concentration in Accounting or Finance
  • 12 years of financial analysis experience, including 5 years of associate supervision experience
  • Knowledge of the Publix payroll process
  • Knowledge of internal corporate structure
  • Advance knowledge of SAP HR & Financial modules or similar ERP systems
  • Advance knowledge of tax provision software and tax research tools (e.g., OneSource, CCH AnswerConnect, and Bloomberg/BNA HR & Payroll Resource)

Year End Bonus

As a year-end bonus to associates, Publix issues one month’s extra pay (pro-rated in the first year) each year if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check that year. This is calculated as a 13th month of pay in the Potential Annual Pay with Bonus line above.
