The purpose of this position is to ensure Publix accurately reports, pays and accounts for sales tax collected from our customers and use tax due on taxable purchases. The sales and use tax remitted each month is approximately $70 million. In addition, the sales tax analyst is responsible for assisting the sales tax consultant when needed on special projects, ad hoc reporting and quarterly analysis.

This position impacts all purchasing areas as well as the point-of-sale system in all Publix locations. Sales tax analysts are responsible for ensuring compliance with tax regulations and minimizing tax liabilities on all outbound and inbound transactions.

Responsibilities include:

• Understanding sales tax rules and regulations for the purchase of goods and services and the sale of goods at retail locations.
• Analyzing, reconciling and preparing sales and use tax returns for Publix Super Markets, Inc. and subsidiaries.
• Financial reporting related to the sales and use tax general ledger accounts.
• Sales tax projects as assigned by leadership.

Required Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Business, Legal, Finance, Accounting or equivalent combination of formal training/certification and professional work experience that demonstrates the prerequisite competence to perform the duties of this position.
• 3 years’ experience in an analytical field
• Knowledge of corporate buying or Publix retail experience
• Must be detailed oriented and possess problem solving skills
• Ability to identify rules, principles, or relationships that explain facts, data, or other information; analyzes information and makes correct inferences or draws accurate conclusions
• Ability to self-direct work activities and take action on tasks without direction from a supervisor; ability to undertake new tasks as work is completed without being told to do so; ability to use the resources available to complete a task; proactively following through on tasks to ensure appropriate progress is made and the task is completed
• Ability to develop and maintain professional, trusting, positive, and productive working relationships with associates, managers, customers, and vendors
• Basic Microsoft Word skills
• Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Legal, Finance, Accounting, or another analytical discipline or equivalent experience
• 4 years’ experience in an analytical field
• Knowledge of Publix systems, including PIMS, SAP, SACT, Host and ETS
• Knowledge of sales tax rules and regulations
• Knowledge of Publix operations and facilities
• Intermediate Microsoft Word skills
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
• Knowledge of Vertex, OneSource and CCH

Year End Bonus

To reward associates for their contributions to the company for the calendar year, Publix provides a Holiday Bonus in November. In the first year of continuous employment the bonus is equal to 15 hours of pay, and in the second year of continuous employment the bonus is equal to one week’s pay if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check. In subsequent years, the bonus is equal to two weeks’ pay.
