Description

The purpose of this position is to provide pest control, bird prevention and wildlife prevention services to all Publix support facilities according to the Publix Integrated Pest Management Program. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is defined as a decision making process that anticipates and prevents pest activity infestation by combining several strategies to achieve long-term solutions. IPM includes the comprehensive use of all methods and materials available to the pest management professional: sanitation, insect and rodent proofing, proper storage practices, and the use of both chemical and non-chemical tools to manage pests.

Additionally, this position is also responsible for providing leadership and training to pest control technicians.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading and training pest control associates reporting to Distribution.
  • Responsible for pest prevention for Distribution, Manufacturing, and all support facilities.
  • Responsible for bird (avian) prevention for Distribution, Manufacturing, and all support facilities.
  • Responsible for wildlife prevention (e.g. cats, dogs, deer, ducks, geese, sand hill cranes, snakes, opossums, raccoons, hogs, fox, alligators, bats) for Distribution, Manufacturing, and all support facilities.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Current or previous possession of a Registered Technician ID Card
  • 1 year as a Pest Control Technician A or equivalent
  • Current Certified Applicator for the state of North Carolina or willingness to obtain certification within 90 days
  • Thorough knowledge of Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA)
  • Knowledge of entomology
  • Thorough knowledge of FDA Food Codes and the Code of Federal Regulations concerning food safety
  • Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the control and handling of urban wildlife and urban pest birds. (US Fish and Wildlife Services)
  • Ability to be exposed to confidential information and matters

  • Be at least 20 years old and have a valid driver’s license and obtain authorization to drive a company vehicle (on or before his or her start date in the position)
  • Required to complete a minimum of 4 hours of continuing education credits annually
  • Be able to use a snorkel, boom or high lift (from 50 to 130 feet)
  • Be able to obtain medical clearance to wear respiratory protection (an air purifying respirator) within 2 weeks of accepting the contingent job offer (requires maintaining facial hair in a manner ensuring the respirator fits properly)
  • Willingness to travel overnight
  • Willingness to work various work schedules, weekends, nights and holidays
  • Willingness to stay until the job is complete
  • Willingness to be on call 24 hours a day and seven days a week for emergency response

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree in Entomology or a science related field
  • Structural Pest Control license for the state of North Carolina
  • 5 years as a Certified Applicator
  • Knowledge of corporate and departmental guidelines and policies
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of EPA regulations
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations
  • Knowledge of building construction and facility design
  • Knowledge of warehousing, distribution and manufacturing plant operations
  • Knowledge of Publix’s organizational structure
  • Knowledge of the grocery and the pest control industry
  • Knowledge of project management and continuous quality improvement

Year End Bonus

To reward associates for their contributions to the company for the calendar year, Publix provides a Holiday Bonus in November. In the first year of continuous employment the bonus is equal to 15 hours of pay, and in the second year of continuous employment the bonus is equal to one week’s pay if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check. In subsequent years, the bonus is equal to two weeks’ pay.
