In Risk Management, the General Liability Claims Specialist is responsible for a variety of areas, including analyzing low and mid-level general liability (and fleet) bodily injury claims, to ensure ongoing adjudication of claims within company standards and industry best practices. The Claims Specialist conducts liability assessments for non-litigated attorney represented and customer claims. The Claims Specialist also exclusively handles Fleet, CQA, QRE and Crime and Casualty events. As well, this role is responsible for preliminarily identifying subrogation opportunities.

General Liability is comprised of approximately 80 associates working in the Customer Claims Unit (CCU) and the Represented Claims Unit (RCU). The General Liability Claims Specialist works closely with and reports to a Represented Claims Supervisor and Manager.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing, investigating, and adjusting asserted non-attorney represented customer claims and attorney represented customer claims to a resolution.
  • Evaluating and completing potential risk transfer referrals and overseeing the administrative functions involved in the resolution of non-attorney represented customers claims and resolution of claim subrogation against third parties.
  • Entering claim details into the Risk Management claims system.
  • Reviewing and analyzing negotiation/settlement claim details, complying with federally mandated Medicare reporting on settled claims.
  • Developing an action plan for effectively managing litigated claims during handling process.
  • Identifying specific types of liability claims that may require special risk mitigation consideration.
  • All other additional responsibilities assigned as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of liability claims handling experience
  • Knowledge of:
    • Principals of general liability including familiarity with concepts of legal negligence and notice
    • General insurance adjusting procedures, rules, and ethics.

  • Ability to:
    • Obtain Florida All Lines Adjuster License upon hire as well as reciprocal license for the states that Publix operates in
    • Manage confidential and sensitive information.
  • High degree of maturity, patience, discretion, tact, and independent judgment
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Availability to work extended hours, travel locally, and overnight, and work nights as business needs require.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
  • 3+ years of liability claims handling experience
  • Paralegal Certification
  • Actively holds Florida All Lines Adjuster’s License
  • Knowledge of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia state specific:
    • Legal issues and burden of proof relating to General Liability and Auto negligence.
    • Legal issues and evidentiary standards relating to damages.
    • Risk transfer and notice obligations relating to same
    • Civil procedure
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Basic skills in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Experience with Risk Management Claims Systems and/or Medicare Reporting Systems

Year End Bonus

As a year-end bonus to associates, Publix issues one month’s extra pay (pro-rated in the first year) each year if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check that year. This is calculated as a 13th month of pay in the Potential Annual Pay with Bonus line above.
