Refrigeration Technician, Facilities Refrigeration - Orlando

As a Publix Refrigeration Technician, you will have the opportunity to provide premier customer service to our retail stores by performing all repair and maintenance for our refrigeration systems! This includes performing general hardware and ice machine refrigeration maintenance, performing HVAC repair and maintenance, rack refrigeration general maintenance and routine general refrigeration maintenance service requests for retail stores in the area. Without our Refrigeration Technicians keeping our systems fine-tuned, we simply couldn't provide the quality of products needed to serve our customers!

The following positions are available: Refrigeration Technician I, II, and III.

The position offered is contingent upon the qualifications and work experience of the candidate.

Primary responsibilities include the following:
  • Refrigeration Technician I
    • Performs daily maintenance and repairs of our refrigerated case doors and hardware and walk-in doors and hardware throughout our retail stores
    • Reviews and reports on workmanship of our refrigeration service suppliers
    • Visits stores and provides feedback on the operational quality of our refrigerated cases and equipment
  • Refrigeration Technician II
    • Responds to emergencies after normal working hours and weekends when needed Performing repairs and general maintenance on HVAC package units and split systems (i.e., Seasons Four, McQuay, Lennox)
    • Performing repairs and general maintenance on the refrigeration systems of self-contained cases
  • Refrigeration Technician III-
    • Performing repairs and general maintenance on the rack refrigeration systems for all refrigerant types in Publix Retail locations (CO2, Glycol, 449, 404A, R22, 448, etc.)
    • Performing repairs and general maintenance on the refrigeration systems of remote cases


Required Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems and Microsoft Outlook
  • High School diploma or its equivalent
  • 1 year working in skilled trades service or construction disciplines OR 3 years Publix Retail or Operations experience
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • EPA Universal License
  • Basic time management skills, knowledge in computers and knowledge in Food Safety
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and respond to emergencies when needed, including nights and weekends
  • Must be able to lift/lower/climb ladders/walk on roofs
  • Must be 18 years old
Preferred Qualifications
  • Intermediate knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems and Microsoft Outlook
  • 5 years working in supermarket refrigeration service
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics involving integrated systems of electrical, EMS, mechanical, refrigeration, and plumbing.
  • Ability to weld/solder copper pipe of various sizes utilizing oxy-acetylene torch.
  • Ability to weld/solder copper pipe to brass and steel valves or fittings
  • Ability to read electrical schematic diagrams to determine the sequence of operation
  • Ability to connect and calibrate electrical devices such as current sensing relays, transducers, magnetic switches
  • Knowledge of the oil return system including the discharge oil separator
  • Knowledge of electronic CDS setup and operation
  • Knowledge of the use of a psychometric chart
  • Ability to diagnose transformers primary and secondary voltages
  • Ability to connect and use a megohmmeter to determine the status of an AC motor winding
  • Ability to read and interpret oil analysis reports and utilize the information to anticipate repairs
  • Ability to change both external oil filters as well as internal oil filters, select the proper oil for a given application and identify contaminants in oil and the problems each causes
  • Ability to install and align various direct drive couplings
  • Ability to properly diagnose pump issues utilizing pressure gauges and flow meters
  • Knowledge of electro- mechanical ball valves ahead of the heat exchangers
  • Ability to diagnose and repair pump issues using pressure readings and amperage draw
  • Ability to determine proper rotation using only an ammeter
  • Knowledge of the different rack configurations (i.e. parallel racks/split config/ loop/glycol/dual stage)
  • Knowledge of dual path air conditioner operations systems and diagnose and resolve high humidity issues
  • Ability to fault-cause-remedy diagnose and repair gas hot water heating systems
  • Knowledge of electronic expansion valves and mechanical expansion valves and how to diagnose and remedy issues with either
  • Knowledge of electronically commutated and shaded pole evaporator fan motors and how to diagnose and remedy issues with either
  • Ability to obtain pressure and amperage readings to determine compressor performance
  • Ability to isolate and evacuate a condenser
  • Ability to program multi fan split condensers
  • Advanced knowledge in Food Safety
  • Expert knowledge of refrigerant management and usage:
  • Application of the EPA Clean Air act sections 608 and 609 in refrigerant capture, reclamation and documentation
  • Understanding of various refrigerants and their usage
  • Ability to determine which refrigerants are in use when not marked on a schematic or labelling
  • Knowledge of refrigerant oils used in each refrigerant type
  • How to purge non-condensable materials from a system

Frequency of Pay Weekly Hours of Work 7:00am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday, with night or weekend work as needed Year End Bonus To reward associates for their contributions to the company for the calendar year, Publix provides a Holiday Bonus in November. In the first year of continuous employment the bonus is equal to 15 hours of pay, and in the second year of continuous employment the bonus is equal to one week’s pay if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check.
