Director of Workers’ Compensation, QA and Training - Lakeland

This position will provide strategic direction and leadership to the Publix workers’ compensation group. This position will lead Publix’s non-Florida workers’ compensation team with a focus on controlling workers’ compensation costs and ensuring exemplary claims handling on non-Florida workers’ compensation claims. This position also will be responsible for working with other groups within Publix Risk Management to lead the development of quality assurance, audit, and training processes for all of Risk Management, including the liability claims group. The position will also advise on the purchase of workers’ compensation, liability and other types of casualty insurance. The position is responsible for monitoring and responding to legislative and regulatory changes in states other than Florida. The successful candidate must excel at development and analysis of key metrics. In addition, the successful candidate will inspire and motivate the team to drive results and continuously improve.
Additional responsibilities:

  • leads department-wide compliance/audit functions to ensure claims best practices are being properly executed and regulatory compliance is maintained
  • develops and manages department-wide training and skills development tailored to Publix’s fully self-administered workers’ compensation and liability claims management
  • assesses changes in the workers’ compensation, legislative, legal, and regulatory environment to identify and implement needed changes and improvements to address the changing environment of workers’ compensation in Publix’s operating states other than Florida.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
  • at least ten (10) years of management experience in workers’ compensation claims administration, claims consulting, risk management or workers’ compensation insurance
  • at least five (5) years of supervisory claims experience
  • experience overseeing high value workers’ compensation claims
  • experience with claims audits and quality control in a claims environment
  • All–Lines adjuster license or eligibility to take the adjuster exam in states where required
  • knowledge of workers’ compensation laws and concepts
  • knowledge of claims staffing and claims organizational structure
  • basic knowledge of Risk Information Systems and Claims Systems
Preferred Qualifications
  • ten (10) or more years management experience administering claim programs involving self-insured and significant retained risk workers’ compensation claims; preferably working for a self-insured employer or TPA
  • five (5) or more years of supervisory experience in a workers’ compensation claims administration environment
  • experience in the development of training and continuing education curriculum
  • experience developing claims audit, claims quality assurance tools and metrics
  • experience in risk and loss analytics and use of Risk Information Management Systems and queries
  • experience in attorney management, legal fee cost control and legal fee management
  • experience in medical management and containment of medical costs involving workers’ compensation claims, including knowledge of the delivery of medical case management services, the PPO, PBM and medical bill review marketplace
  • Associate of Risk Management, Associate in Claims, Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter or similar designation
  • knowledge of loss forecasting, actuarial principles, analysis, reserving, financial reports
  • proven strategic and tactical abilities
  • knowledge of corporate insurance, risk transfer techniques and risk funding issues
  • knowledge of surety bonds, aviation, and other insurance products
  • knowledge of the workers’ compensation regulatory framework in states where Publix operates
  • knowledge of general liability laws and concepts including claims handling.
Potential Annual Pay with Bonus 142,220 - 213,590 Frequency of Pay Monthly Hours of Work Minimum of 45 hours per week Year End Bonus One month’s pay (pro-rated in the first year) if associate remains employed through issue date of the bonus check. Galloway Road City Lakeland Region FL between Orlando and Tampa Other Compensation Information This position is also eligible for an Incentive Bonus, which is determined based on the Company’s results compared to its sales and profit goals for the fiscal year. The Company's incentive bonus plan is based on a target bonus equal to two months pay but the bonus varies from year to year based on the Company’s results.
