Job Spotlight: Senior Manager of Diversity and Human Resources Analysis
At Publix, we strive to create a workforce as diverse as the customers we serve. Welcome back to our job spotlight series. Did you know we have an entire department that focuses on making diversity and inclusion a priority at Publix?
Meet Chris. Chris is the senior manager of diversity and human resources analysis at Publix. His job is to work with leadership to maintain a culture that is rich in unique perspectives, fresh ideas and equal opportunity. His goal is to ensure that all candidates and associates feel included and respected. He accomplishes this by focusing on inclusion through Publix’s associate development and advancement programs, mentoring program, summer internship program, and so much more.
Why diversity and inclusion are important.
Our founder Mr. George believed in respecting the dignity of each individual associate. He once said, “If you want people to respect you or your company, you must first show respect for them.” An integral part of our culture has always been treating people fairly. Since the early 1990’s, the role of diversity manager has existed to bring the Publix family together. Chris believes by continuing to understand and respect the individual characteristics of one another, our associates will grow and our company will be stronger.
The team shared that those surveys are not simple tasks, as much time, effort and planning goes into each one. Several different types of surveys are performed, including when new locations are acquired, before and after store remodels and after new stores are built. Each survey is performed at a different stage of a store’s construction, which keeps our ADA field surveyors busy with research to obtain and gather all the proper information. For new stores and remodels, surveyors need to determine the exterior scope of the Publix or shopping center before conducting the survey. They also need to acquire site plans to identify the location of accessible parking, access to aisles, accessible routes, curb ramps, etc. Lastly, the surveyors must coordinate with construction on survey days and times.
Chris, himself, is an example of an associate with a unique story and background. He was born in Jamaica and came to the United States at 13 years old. He began his Publix career in 2001 as a part-time grocery clerk while attending college, where he went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He joined the human resources team in 2005, as an investigator, and later became a legal specialist, all while completing his Ph.D. He has been in his current role since 2013. Chris often shares his success story with other associates who have migrated to the United States as an example of what opportunities may arise as a result of hard work and determination. More than anything, Chris feels that creating a diverse work environment is the right thing to do for the future of our company and the future of our society.
